Why not create the Ultimate Media Server? What UMS lacks.

Dear Tech-Savy Warriors,

I've searched on these forums and on general search engines, yet, I cannot find an answer to a question that many have wondered about: Is there a way to have UMS create dynamic folders (i.e. video, music, and photo-only, automatically sorted folders using Internet metadata and filtering that will plainly group flies into folders by media type, extension, actor, director, etc.)? I know I'm not the only person that has Terabytes of media that we love and think about, yet, we're not sure just where they might be found in the deep ocean of data. I use a Sony Blu Ray player (if anyone cares). The "bump" option is a step in the right direction. But, I cannot get the playlist created on my PC to show up or play on my player. One file is remotely played from PC to Blu Ray/TV and ends there, neglecting the other files in the 'bump" playlist. If any of my questions have definite answers, I'd be most grateful to have them brought to my attention. Not having these extra features is maddening. UMS is very, very good at nearly everything. Why not cover all of the bases that the commerical servers have by adding these features, definitively crowning UMS as the Ultimate Media Server? If the above suggestions/questions are technically unfeasible (or are only to be accomplished with the technical knowledge that I do not possess) for a free program (or for whatever other reason[s]), you have my sincerest apologies for possibly wasting your precious time. Thank You for this excellent media server.

Almost forgot to ask: Why do so many video and music files lack not only the ability to rewind and fast forward, but show only --||-- (or something to that extent) for the time? On the aforementioned media servers this limitation rarely seems to be present. Capitalist pigs must have patented these technologies...

Regards,

Maxitrillion

Concerning grouping and sorting videos, you can have a look at ums-mlx which I've created precisely for that.

I appreciate the very prompt response. Will take a look at it.

Thanks for the feedback, Maxitrillion. We are working hard to implement new features and I'm motivated to add more smart features like filter by metadata. There's a lot in the pipeline :)

No problem, SubJunk. I just want UMS to be better than all of those "pay" media servers in every way. The transcoding of your program is super-fast, unlike some of those less-desirables (i.e. Serviio and Kooraroo). I know almost nothing about programming, yet I'm wondering how it is that UMS uses very little resources when compared to the aforementioned servers. With those, transcoding is a nightmare. Super-slow, maxes out CPU, and on and on... What, exactly, is in your programming equivalent to KFC's Seven Herbs and Spices (sorry, there's no equivalency between your work and the Colonel's)?

I agree, Ageless One. Overall, UMS is the most compatible (seemingly works with all file types and extenstions; even FLAC files!) and doesn't require much configuration for the average user. Pardon me, but I don't believe I understand what you speak of for your MLX-Build. Just a little confused how to configure the library and don't understand how to scan folders without incapacitating my CPU. I suppose scanning very large, entire drives (4 TB worth) is not the way to go about it. Thank you for creating this build. I can get it to play videos. However, when navigating my files folders and clicking on one I get an answer telling me that nothing is in my folders that really do have tons of stuff in them. Also, unlike regular UMS, transcoding folder is not available from the renderer-side (Sony Blu Ray Player 2014). Which means that there's no skipping transcoding to allow full control of video FF-RR or even a chapter folder. Again, maybe I just don't understand how to use your creation.
