Need clarification regarding lossless HD Audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X

Hey there,

I've been a long time user of PMS and although that has worked for me well, I'm looking to see if UMS can do things better and by how much; especially regarding HD audio formats in movies.I've read just about every single thread regarding this in existence and am still confused so I'll try and explain it in a simple manner within a few questions.

Can I bitstream Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Audio as is to my receiver without resorting to LPCM audio (I only get 5.1 this way and have never gotten TrueHD yet). If so which option should I check under settings?

I have learned you can't bitstream DTS-HD MA because of lack of support and the best possible is DTS core 5.1 (lossy). BUT, can you get LPCM 7.1 (lossless) from a DTS-HD MA stream by re-encoding somehow? If so which audio option should be checked out of the four in UMS transcoding settings?

Will there be any Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support?

Lastly what audio settings should be set on the PS3 itself. Bitstream/LPCM under video settings and all audio settings in HDMI output? How do those impact a streaming source?

---

The best I've achieved is LPCM 5.1 as read on the PS3 and Multi CH in 5.1 PCM on the receiver. (I only have "use LPCM for audio" checked out of the 4 checkmarks in audio settings) and this never gets me 7.1, only 5.1 for some reason.

I use HDMI and my receiver is the most recent (only released a few months ago) Denon AVR-X1200W and supports everything out of the box including Atmos and DTS:X with an update. So there are no bottlenecks aside from the UMS/PMS.

Thank you for the help!
Sorry for the long post.

There was a similar question discussed recently at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5843&p=22001
I hope it helps, Wolf

I read that before posting and it did not give a clear answer. There are multiple threads out there and faq's that say Dolby TrueHD 7.1 is supported in PMS and UMS, yet I've never been able to work it. That thread says that no HD audio is possible to be encapsulated, which is false.

Then it doesn't make much sense to open a new thread and atomize the discussion...

If you know a way to encapsulate the HD audio formats using ffmpeg or mencoder (the basic tools used by UMS for streaming) please share for the devs to try to incorporate it to the existing configs. We're all looking forward to improve UMS, so every contribution counts!

It does make sense to open a new thread because I have many questions, if you bothered to read, centralized to a different goal and clarifying different issues such as ones which you haven't bothered to answer (although you act as if it is your area of expertise and can answer). So I might as well just keep it short - Can I stream lossless 7.1 audio (in lpcm, as it seems the only option capable despite seeing threads mentioning success with Dolby TrueHD bitsreaming)? And more importantly, what is the status on Dolby Atmos/DTS:X support if any.

Isn't being able to achieve Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the receiver end..."encapsulating hd audio" in itself? Excuse my lack of knowledge a developer might have.

Maybe having these basic questions answered in a clean manner (language that doesn't require a computer science degree to understand) might help. (In the FAQ/support).
