Subtitles - do I need to transcode?

When using my Asus O!play with other DLNA servers I found out that it doesn't support external subtitle files.
That is, apparently the guys that coded the box (Realtek) didn't instruct it to go find an SRT/SSA file in the same place where I have the MP4/MKV files. Lame...
Can UMS deal with this? If so, it does involve transcoding, right? If so, only transcoding, right? I mean, no reencoding needed, right?
Where can I find guides/tutors explaining this feature?
Cheers
EDIT:
Wow, there's my answer.

External subtitles must always be transcoded (or muxed)
