Observations on FFmpeg, MEncoder, and Subtitles

@SubJunk, @valib

I saw SubJunk's commit about deferring to MEncoder for vobsubs so I tried the nightly at the changelog (4fe8) and it works great.

With the latest releases of FFmpeg, FFmpeg is now able to play all of my anime with embedded fonts. Except for the vobsubs, FFmpeg seems to have caught up to MEncoder for subtutles. In fact FFmepg will play one series with correct subtitles that MEncoder will use the wrong font for (as compared to the PC). The series is from Commie subs: [Commie] Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso.

In my experience, FFmpeg is as good as MEncoder for .ass, better than Mencoder at .srt, and potentially better at embedded fonts. I currently only need MEncoder for vobsubs which I don't find very common anymore.

So, I was wondering if embedded fonts should not be considered "problematic subtitles" anymore and to no longer defer to MEncoder for them.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks @Madoka for info. @SubJunk maybe we can change the logic to deffer to the MEncoder for video files with embedded subs larger than e.g. 5 GB. It means only for Blu Ray rips.

You are speaking about this issue ? I was also wondering about the purpose of some lines of code in DLNAResouce.java. So i am glad that your post give me an answer ;-)

Also FFmpeg did make many subtitles improvements until 21 april, i yet saw a displaying delay of around 2s with internal subtitles.

I don't have very big files to test like you though...
