Problems using Windows 8

Post by BeHappy »

When I am using Windows 8 UMS is not able to find the renderer right away. The UMS service starts up OK, when I am starting the PC. When I open UMS no renderer has been found. I can solve the problem easily by restarting the 'Universal Media Server' service (manually :( ).
Is it possible to fix this or can I start the service later. I have already tried to change the Startup type to "Automatic (Delayed start)" but that doesn't help.

I am also getting this error message, upload your logs as per the support sticky, I will do the same.

I have also found that checking 'start with windows' also does not work.

Placing the shortcut in the windows 8 startup folder does not work either, i tried notepad++, this worked ok, so i know it's something specific to UMS.

Cheers

[EDIT]

Files attached

1. Ran UMS, selected install as windows service
2. Quit main UMS panel once information pop up appears
3. Go into Windows 8 services, right click Universal Media Media Server, click open services
4. Right click the Universal Media Media Server service, select properties
5. Click start
6. UMS is not found, not by my android device or my PS3.
7. Re-open UMS from the start menu, selected debug level to trace
8. Watched it load and saw that the UMS was available, but no renderers were found
9. With thre services screen still open, i clicked 'Restart'
10. UMS restart, whilst watching the log, i can now see the renderers appear and all is ok

But, once windows is restarted, or if you shut down the main panel, the windows service does not stick; i.e it seems like the service is not running properly, when windows advises that it is.

I am running windows 8 X64, with all updates to date.
Latest UMS posted in the bi daily build thread (04.03.2013), the issue also occurs with previous builds
Java 7 update 15 (32bit and 64bit installed)

Thanks!

For some extra info, I may have got start with winodws to work.

I un-installed the windows service.

Checked start with windows. restarted, and i believe it came up ok, it never used to start before. Im sure it worked as in the winodws 8 start-up menu settings in task manager, it listed all the processes started with UMS... java etc, about 15 odd i recall.

To be clear, there are two issues here

1. The Windows service not working correctly on the 64bit of windows. I found the same version of UMS ran OK as a service on the 32bit version of Window 8. So i may need to ammend the wrapper.exe config to point to the x86 version of Java after reading more into the issue...but

To get it working, i just need to restart the UMS service. Which makes me believe my set-up as is works ok, just not 'initially' during it's first start.

2. Videos start stuttering after about 30 minutes of streaming, this occurs on my 64bit machine, i have not tested the 32bit machine to see if it stutters.

The second lot of java errors regarding the native thread / memory issues are related to issue 2.

I'm away from home right now, back Saturday, I can do more testing then to see

I've been having this problem for a while too. Funny thing is when I updated my Java a few weeks ago to J 7-15 it was seeing my PS3 for the first day and then stopped working after that. Same thing happened when I first bought my Windows 8 Laptop back in January. For the first day or two it could see my PS3 as a renderer and then stopped. Right now the only thing that works is running the program with the UMS.jar instead of the exe. That method sees the PS3 right away.

I'm also on Windows 8 64-bit. Since I've upgraded from v2.4.2 to 2.5 UMS stopped working. It shows the Stop sign in the status tab and displays the message "No renderers found". Also, none of the two smart (DLNA) Samsung tvs or four smart (DLNA) blu-ray players don't see UMS on the network. On another Windows 7 64-bit computer where I run UMS v2.4.2 everything is ok. The server shows as connected and is available to all DLNA render devices.
On my Windows 8 computer, Java is working (I have installed both 32 and 64 versions).

Uninstalling UMS v2.5 and installing UMS v.2.2.5 (which used to work), didn't help. Any help is appreciated.

Just to be sure, can you make sure your windows firewall isn't blocking UMS. I should be able to install windows 8 shortly (work's getting in the way) to do some of my own testing to see why UMS is having these types of issues. Also this may have no affect but have you tried running it as administrator. simple0 and R9delima could post a debug log so i can compare it to spida_singa's. Thanks in advance

Okay, so i've tested UMS with Windows 8 64bit on my network and found that you need to do a few things. So at first UMS couldn't see the Renderer's (2 Samsung Smart TV's). So i changed the firewall settings to allow it to talk outside my device. Then i had to go to the "General Configuration" page in UMS and Force the correct networking interface, then i also "Force IP of Server" with my ip address and then the port (you may not have too but i did anyway). UMS then was restarted (with restart server, not shutting down UMS and restarting) making sure i also Saved the config. And like magic everything was working.

Now i've included the debug log but as i've seen no other errors it's clean. But i would suggest if your getting errors, you may need to uninstall UMS and all Java versions (you may have 32 and 64 bit installed) which should fix your problems. Now my Windows 8 is a new install with only Java (32bit only) and UMS and nothing else. Hope this helps
