real basic question about playlists

Post by NotarySojac »

UMS looks to be exactly what we were looking for to let us play on our AV center the digitized videos and central iTunes music library stored on our MacMini in another room. But there is what I would think is a very basic question that I have not seen addressed in the FAQ or forum discussions:
iTunes playlists.
How do you get them to play? Each playlist appears as a folder when I go to our iTunes library via our PS3 (Music > Universal Media Server > iTunes Library > Playlists). The individual sons in the playlist play just fine when I click them on the PS3 but clicking the Next and Back icons do nothing. I have to back out, select the next song and play that. Manual shuffle is so '60s. There's a option to Copy the playlist visible on the PS3 but I have no idea where it would copy it to.
I had turned on the Advanced Options in UMS hoping there was a simple tick box labeled "enable iTunes playlists" or something similar, but no such luck.

Can UMS simply not play iTunes playlists?

I have a very similar question.
How can i use or adress itunes playlists?
I use ums to stream music from my macbook Air to a onkyo tx 8050 receviver.
the receiver shows itunes > media > music > folders and i can play/stream single artists/albums.
But how can i play playlists ? (the playlist is not shown on the display)

Thanks for any help :D

Hmmm…I thought the UMS 3.5.0 had resolved the playlist question among other problems - like our PS3 seeing UMS but only displaying "there are no titles".
I deleted the whole ~/Library/Application Support/UMS folder (not the first time I'd tried that), then launched the new 3.5.0 version and stepped through the config wizard.
This time instead of trying my usual playlist I opened a much smaller playlist folder (Peaches - Best of the Stranglers) and clicked the first song. It played through and to my surprise shuffled to another song and played it through too. Guess I had been over thinking the playlist question.
Huzzah! Problem resolved…but no...
I navigated to my usual playlist and tried the same thing but it only played one song then stopped - just like before.
This time I'd left the Logs pane open on UMS and saw a ton of "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space" lines go by. I then could not get anything to play and soon UMP was completely unresponsive - had to Force Quit it. Probably the 2000+ tune playlist was too much for it.
Now I have to figure out how to give it more java memory on our MacMini. There's some plist or config somewhere with Xmx in it that needs to be edited…I remember doing that for CrashPlan a few years ago...
Luckily the Mini has 16Gb of RAM.

(Macbook Air - UMS - Onkyo Networkreceiver)

UMS can`t read the usual itunes playlist format (.itl or .xml).
So the desired playlists have to be exported into .m3u and placed in a new created folder
eg: itunes playlists
and this folder has to be placed in the folder that was shared/enabled in the UMS Controlls (freigegebene Ordner)
eg: /Users/cs/Music/iTunes/

The itunes playlists folder now apears in the receivers display and one can select from all the different exported playlists.

And once a playlist is selected all songs are played without stop and i also can go back and forth within the playlist with the remote of my receiver.

Don#t know whether this helps for a PS3 - but it helped me. :D

Cheers

Thanks, csei4 - I'll try that.
Need a bit of clarification though - did you have to manually share your iTunes folder using the Shared Folders section or did you enable the Show iTunes Library tick box in the Virtual Folders/Files section? I do not have the iTunes folder explicitly shared as in the example you gave.

Hope i Can explain.
When i open UMS i have to share /enable- one or more folders - where UMS looks for information. (music , playlists , vidoe etc)
I have only one where the playlists and the music are (see attachment)

path (mac):
/Users/cs/Music/iTunes

In this folder (itunes) i placed a subfolder called it itunes playlists (i guess you can name it just the way you want)
and from the program itunes first i selct a desired playlist then i choose
mediathek > export playlist
name: dadada
filetyp: m3u
location: itunes playlist (subfolder of the enabled folder in UMS)

alll the best csei4

Thank you, csei4 - I wasn't sure if you shared only the playlists folder without having the Share iTunes item checked, but it looks like you do not have the Advanced Settings on so it probably is not shared.
