Cannot seek when using transcode on Samsung TV

Post by WhyBee »

Hi guys,

I'm trying to watch anime using UMS and when I use the transcode option to play files mkv anime with subtitles there isn't the abilitiy to seek or fast forward. The TV I am using is the 40" Samsung LED Smart TV (UN40EH5300) so it detects UMS by itself and I don't need to use a PS3. I have a PS3 in my main living room and when I attempt to do the same thing by watching through the PS3 I am able to seek or set what minute/hour I want to skip to. I tried looking around and changing some options in the SamsungAllShare.conf but no luck. Can anyone help me with this?

Welcome to the forums WhyBee, this has been the case ever since i've started using SamsungTv's. If i disable ChunkedTransfer in the .conf file(ChunkedTransfer=false) I can't timeseek, but i can if it's true. But the issue is that even with setting ChunkedTransfer=true and transcode a video (either FFmpeg/Mencoder) the timescale goes to 2sec (for a movie that may last 1:50mins) so you can't move forward in time (but you can in reverse). Now i've had some luck before getting more than 2sec on video time but as soon as i move forward the video stops. Not sure what the developers can do about this but i'll see if they can have a look.

Hi Optimus_prime,

Thanks for the response. It's a shame that this is a known problem with no solution at the moment =[ I checked my .conf file and chunkedtransfer was set to true and I still couldn't do any type move forward or backwards in time. I tried setting it to false to see what would happen and the files wouldn't even load! :O
I hope something can be done but if it can't then that's unfortunate. I'll just keep watching my anime on my computer but at least i can watch my english shows and movies on the tv.

Cool, i've been checking back on this topic every now and again. Where would the best place be to find if there is a fix or a hotfix that has been implemented?

WhyBee, i think i've got the right setting to change. You could do this either one of two ways, open the Universal Media Server folder in Program Files x86, open Renderer's, open the SamsungAllshare.conf and add this line

Code: Select all

TranscodedVideoFileSize = 1000000
Otherwise just copy the file i've included in the post, into the renderer folder and overwrite the existing config file. Hope this fixes the issue for you.

Try higher number if it helps (restarting UMS is required!):

Code: Select all

TranscodedVideoFileSize = 100000000000
Edit:
For experimenting the max value can be "281474976710655" 8-)

Tried setting it to the maximum and still no luck. When I try to run it transcoded it still doesn't offer the ability to seek or fast forward at all

Post a log because:
- we don't see how your TV is detected so which renderer.conf file is used
- attached SamsungAllShare.conf file for testing is now obsolete, latest versions doesn't include "AllShare" variant
When we will see your version of UMS, renderer conf loaded, we can check the configuration but not earlier
Anyway you can try to change these two settings in renderer conf which is loaded for your TV:

Code: Select all

SeekByTime = True / False (False by default)
ChunkedTransfer = True / False (False by default)
Check all variants of these settings if any change is spotted. Restart of UMS is required after any change!
Also test all the buttons on your remote. I remember some user with Samsung mentioned that some buttons doesn't work but others yes (<< >> ^-up/down/left/right navigation arrow etc...)
