Cannot see UMS from Android device

Post by savatar »

Hi there

I am really struggling to pick up the Universal Media Server from my wireless devices.
All my wired devices seem to pick it up perfectly.
PS3 and Xbox and Smart TV all see it.
Strange thing is Android phone with XBMC remote sees XBMC server, so that sort of kills my wireless to wired lan suspicion.

Any assistance would be highly appreciated

This depends on your network configuration. DLNA only works within a single IP subnet (the same IP "range"), so if your wireless and wired network are assigned different IP subnets you're out of luck. If that's the case, firewalls on the Media Server is a common problem. Most OS'es come with a firewall already configured to block all incoming access, but if that was the case your wired devices shouldn't see it either.

My bet is that your wireless router has it's own subnet, in which case it has to be reconfigured to be in "brige"/"transparent"/"access point" or whatever your router manufacturer calls it mode. What it does it make your wireless router stop acting as a router and just becoming a wireless access point expanding your existing wired network using the same subnet.
