UMS Stopped working.

Post by El_Commi »

Hey guys.
I've been using UMS since the demise of PS3 Media Server.

Unfortunately over the weekend it suddenly stopped working. I went to turn it on one evening and the Ps3 was unable to find the server, and vice versa.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Rebooting router and reinstalling Java (I had that problem in the past) but no luck.

Any ideas?

Did it just stop without you doing anything, using the same version that's been working before? If so, I must say that I strongly suspect that there's a firewall that's been activated here. I can see no traffic from any external devices in the log, so UMS seems to be isolated. Try turning off all firewalls that you have installed, including Windows firewall and see if that helps.

Thanks. I'll try that.

And yeah, it literally stopped working. THe only thing I could think of was I updated Java/flash over the weekend. But I then installed earleir version of both to no joy.

*edit* Yep, firewall issue. I should have checked that. I never got a warning though. So humm :<

Thanks very much for sorting it! =)

*edit again*
Added the exception to windows firewall, and its not allowed through. But if I disable the firewall it is. Hmm.

Any ideas?

If the firewall rules are process based, you need to allow java and not UMS I think. But there are other problems with firewalls as well, like blocking the creation of pipes or blocking broadcasts. The best option is to leave the firewall off, if you have a router between you and the internet you don't need a firewall on the local computer anyway (the router acts as a firewall).

You can check it via Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, Inbound Rules. Check that the proper Java version (in the Program column) is Allowed on the Private network, both TCP & UDP (sometimes old Rules remain for older/uninstalled versions of Java not in use by UMS, you may even delete the orphan entries)

That covers Windows Firewall, but there are many other firewall products that could be installed.

I'm using the Windows firewall.
I'll give it a shot once I get home see if it sorts it. When I was flicking through the list last nit, there was a few versions of Java that were blocked so that's probably it.
