problems when switching ps3 to ps4

Post by cyagus »

Hi,

I've been using PS3 for a while with PS3 media server, it is quite stable for a long time but now I am planning to buy a PS4. When I try streaming with my friend's PS4 I saw that PS4 is unable to play MKV files from PS3 media server. Bu I now recognised this UMS application, do you think that it is possible to stream all kinds of video formats to PS4? This is very important for me since my decision about buying PS4 depends on it.

Thanks in advance.

We support the PS4, but I don't think it's as well supported as the PS3. I don't really know, I don't own a PS4, but I know we have users using the PS4 so most things are probably working.

Hopefully someone with a PS4 will see this thread and tell you their experience, or you could search the forum for PS4 and I'm sure you'd learn of any issues.

I just got a PS4 this holiday season and have been using a PS3 as my renderer before.

You can stream mkv's to the PS4 with UMS, but a few of them need to be transcoded. I am assuming it's due to the encoding parameters on them. You can transcode them over and watch them; however, the PS4 media player sucks with transcoded material. It works fine if you don't have to stop, FF or RW. With transcoded material, the PS4 does not know the length of the file (the time stamp areas is --/--) so you can't jump around the file. So watching soft subtitled stuff sucks. It steams mp4's just fine. I think I played an avi as well.

Therefore, I still use my PS3 for all transcoded material which for me is almost everything as I need subtitles and thus transcoding. I will use the PS4 on those mkv's that stream as that's obviously better, but as I have the remote for the PS3, I generally still like using the PS3 for most things. I am hoping that some future update will improve things to at least the PS3's level.

This is on PS4 media player v.1.50.

I don't think I have any mkv's that big. Largest one I tried was about 2.5G.
