Transcoding on Samsung AllShare crashes UMS

Post by tanaytopac »

I have a Samsung 55ES7000 TV and I'm sharing it video using UMS 2.4.2 from my Mac. When I don't go to transcode folder and just play the movie it plays without any problem. But when I go to transcode folder and try to play a Mencoder transcoded video, the TV says loading for about 45 seconds and then it says please check network connection.

At the same time my computer's fans speed up, there's definitely something using CPU extensively at that time and maybe causing UMS to restart? I'm attaching debug.log, if you can help me I'd be much appreciated.

Hi Tanaytopac,
there's an issue with transcoding to samsung tv's, see this forum topic viewtopic.php?f=5&t=297
I'm trying to track down why this is the case as i have 2 samsung tv's myself. I can't give any form of time frame on when it will be fixed.

The reason your computer speeds up is that when transcoding your using you computer to convert the file to a format that the renderer (in your case your TV) can use. It uses lot's of CPU (and in some cases gpu) resources to convert on the fly. Wikipedia has a good write up if you want to know the exact details.

Thanks Optimus_Prime for detailed explanation. I was thinking the speed-up thing was caused by some kind of loophole or something. I'm glad you're aware and into this issue.

I noticed this issue when I'm trying to watch a movie with 3d subtitle and this required me to use the .ass subtitle format, which required using transcoding. In all other cases Samsung tv works just fine.

Anyways, if I can help in any way you can ask. I'll try to do my best.
