Problems playing MKVs with TSMuxer w/6 ch AC-3
When I used to use PMS 1.53 (and earlier versions), playing MKVs (using TSMuxer) worked perfectly for all my MKVs.
Now on the current versions of both UMS and PMS I have problems playing some of those MKVs.
The trace logs show me playing two MKVs:
When I play Game.of.Thrones.S01E01, I get the unsupported data.
When I play Game.of.Thrones.S01E02, it plays just fine.
As a side note: If I go into the Transcode folder and play Game.of.Thrones.S01E01 using MEncoder it works.
Another side note: For Game.of.Thrones.S01E01, on PMS FFMPEG works, but on UMS it does not, and AVSynth/Mencoder also does not work on UMS.

Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
What do you have set as your default video transcoder (at the top of the list)?

BTW the config file is part of the trace log bundle:
engines = pmsencoder,tsmuxer,mencoder,avsmencoder,ffmpegvideo,ffmpegaudio,mplayeraudio,tsmuxeraudio,ffmpegwebvideo,vlcvideo,mencoderwebvideo,mplayervideodump,mplayerwebaudio,vlcaudio,ffmpegdvrmsremux,rawthumbs
Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
Have you tried just leaving Mencoder at the top of the list and left Remux videos with tsMuxeR when possible option checked for it?
Also, under the Audio settings tab. Making sure that Keep DTS and Keep AC3 are also checked as well.

Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
None of those settings seem to change the behavior.
Keep AC3 was already checked as well as Remux with TxMuxer.
Moving Mencoder to the top and checking Keep DTS do not seem to have any effect which doesn't surprise me given the audio is AC-3.
I did just find a difference between the two files though.
Game.of.Thrones.S01E01: Video 2 994Kbps, 1280*720 at 23.976 fps, AVC ([email protected]) (CABAC / 3 Ref Frames) Audio 384 Kbps, 48.0 Khz, 16 bits, 6 Channels AC-3
Game.of.Thrones.S01E02: Video 3 284Kbps, 1280*720 at 23.976 fps, AVC ([email protected]) (CABAC / 3 Ref Frames) Audio 384 Kbps, 48.0 Khz, 16 bits, 2 Channels AC-3
So the file that is having trouble is 6 Channel AC-3 and the one without trouble is 2 Channel AC-3, this seems to be consistent, as other files that I have trouble playing also have 6 Channel AC-3.

Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
Could this be related? Looks like about the right timeframe.
Universal Media Server 1.20 Changelog:
Added workaround for 2.0 384 kbits AC3 PS3 audio bug (PMS issue #230 & #1414)

Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
You can easily test it by unticking "Keep AC3" and setting AC3 reencoding to e.g. 640.
UMS should reencode your AC3 to higher bitrate so if it will work, try 384 then. If problem will arise, this bitrate (when audio is stereo) should be problematic.
Also you can try to use 256 if it will work and PS3 has problem with bitrate lower than 385 or only 384 is buggy.

Re: Problems playing some MKVs with TSMuxer
I guess that was a red herring, the real issue here seems to be TSMuxer with 6 Channel (5.1) AC-3
The thing that stands out to me in the logs is this:
DEBUG 2013-03-07 00:19:27.206 [Thread-68] Stream #0:0: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), fltp, 384 kb/s (default)
DEBUG 2013-03-07 00:19:27.808 [Thread-87] Decoding AC3 stream (track 2): Bitrate: 384Kbps Sample Rate: 48KHz Channels: 2
Why does the second line (TSMuxer) say "Channels: 2" when the the source is 5.1 and I have it set to use TSMuxer and keep AC-3 (i.e. just remux my h.264/AC-3 MKV to a h.264/AC-3 TS)
Hmm this is interesting, I found another file that has 6 channel AC-3 that does play with TSMuxer.
DEBUG 2013-03-10 01:53:15.105 [Thread-323] Stream #0:0: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), fltp, 384 kb/s (default)
DEBUG 2013-03-10 01:53:15.695 [Thread-342] Decoding AC3 stream (track 2): Bitrate: 384Kbps Sample Rate: 48KHz Channels: 6
So again, the real question seems to be why for the first file does TSMuxer to try decode 2 channels instead of 6?

Re: Problems playing MKVs with TSMuxer w/6 ch AC-3
Has it happened with more than one MKV? Because I remember there were problems with that first GoT file and when it was released some people were asking for a repack but it never came, so I think in that case it's an unusual buggy file
Re: Problems playing MKVs with TSMuxer w/6 ch AC-3
I don't have problems with AC3 or DTS in an .mkv container. I can get 6 channels for both to my receiver just fine.
