Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
Hello, friends !
It is years I use UMS, and am quite satisfied with it. I use it to stream movies and series from my PC to my PS3, and it works perfectly.
All is stored on various extarnal harddrives.
Until version 13.10.1, everything was OK, software was starting in a few seconds and it was possible to watch movie on my TV through the PS3.
But now, it has updated to the 14.0.2 version, and it does not stard (I only have the launching image, with a message saying "initializing media scanner").
Is it something only happening the first time I launch the software, or will it happen every time I use it ??? Is there another problem ?

Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
The first run from a new update (or a fresh install) will take a bit more time to start as it has to update the database and/or scan your files.
Next time UMS is started it should not take as long.
There could also be a problem somewhere if it happens each time but I will need logs to see why (see the section in red above)

Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
I'm having a similar problem using 13.2.1-SNAPSHOT. I load the port 9002 in a browser (port 9002) and every page takes 30 seconds to load. vmstat shows a massive spike in IO. medias.mv.db is 30GB
Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
The database should not be that big and may be a sign that it is corrupted. Mine is only 74MB but I don't have as large a media collection as some people.
There may be more information in your logs showing why (see the section in red above)
This may have happened if you downloaded the snapshot build when there were changes to the database tables that were not fully tested.
You could probably fix this by deleting the database folder (or renaming it) and UMS will recreate it when it is next started.
This may take a while to re-scan everything the first time depending on the size of your collection.
It might be better to use the main V14 release and do a clean install too.

Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
Does this count as a large media library?
Audio : ~17000
Movies : ~1200
Shows: ~300 episodes
I turned on debug logging. It seems to be rescanning my library. Which is strange because nothing has changed.

Trying to install 14.0.2 from source, I get

Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
Yeah that is quite a collection but the database should be nowhere near that size even with all that.
If you have been upgrading from previous versions and keeping the database it will be very bloated.
It could be making it worse if you have been building from source as there have been times when changes to the tables in the database have broken things, or the way the data is stored has changed so there could be a lot of redundant data there.
Try from the download page for the main release so you are not using a snapshot version which may have unfinished issues.
I can't tell what that error is without context though. Is this during compile or when your library is being scanned?

Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
I was building 14.0.2 from source checked out via git.
Host is AlmaLinux 8.9, Java bellsoft-jdk17.0.6+10, Maven 3.9.0, ffmpeg 4.2.9
I managed to get the package built by adding -DskipTests.
I did a clean install and is now 629mb.

Code: Select all
mkdir 14.0.2
git -C 14.0.2 clone --depth=1 https://github.com/UniversalMediaServer/UniversalMediaServer.git --branch 14.0.2
cd 14.0.2/UniversalMediaServer
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/bellsoft-java17.x86_64 mvn package -P linux-x86_64
I did a clean install and is now 629mb.
Re: Last versions very slow at launching (since 14.0)
I got impatient, removed pictures from the SHARED.conf, and restarted UMS. I waited from the rescan to finish. medias.mv.db is 86mb.
I then load :9002 into my browser and I see a lot in debug.log
So it took 1m30s for the page to be shown. This doesn't seem to happen for other pages.
