How to install UMS on NAS?

Hi everyone. First of all I am grateful to discover all you great people working so hard to help everyone else - makes me warm inside

I have a PS3 and a NAS (Synology DS411+) and up untill now I have used the PS3 to stream my files located on the NAS. But I have had the normal challenges (not being able to play mkv and now the annoying Cinavia-issues)

I have read other forums on the topic, but they are all very technical for a non-programmer like myself

The synology-NAS has a built-in UPnP-media server, but I would love to be able to use UMS, so that the PS3 recognizes my NAS as such. Is there a step-by-step procedure that I can follow to install UMS unto my NAS? I have installed it on my labtop, and it works perfect, but I have all my backups on my NAS, and would love to be able to keep on streaming LAN instead of WLAN from a labtop.

I hope someone can help me out or point me in the right direction. I´m a fast learner and I want this to work.

Are you trying to LOAD the applicaiton on the NAS?

or are you trying to have your NAS discover UMS on another machine?

LOADING the app might pose difficult (installing in a headless [non-GUI] configuration), but discovering i can help you with.

To start copy this to a txt file on your desktop:

next in UMS look for the line that will say somthing like this:

You'll need to know that info so that you can build your custom CONF file with that search header info.

From there its just a matter of knowing what renderers your NAS can do.

Personally... i would use a Server (beafy cpu and ram, GFX card) that points to a NAS for storage either VIA eSATA or Gigabit network instead of hosting the headless install of a UMS.
