[Solved] Stuttering playback on wired connection

Post by Godinster »

Getting stuttering on 720p files.

My setup

i5-2500k Processor, 8 GB of RAM computer
Gigabit router
Wired through powerline. Tried wired router to PS3 and Wireless N on desktop, same result so naturally I'm sticking to wired.

Tried swapping deduxer default, increased bandwidth in the .bat file, increased buffer from 200 to 400 as well. PMS/UMS worked fine on my girlfriend's slower computer before we mvoed but I always had trouble using stock settings, now her's has kicked the bucket and we're stuck using my [faster] computer with problems. I've even recently installed Windows 8 and completely wiped my comp, still same issues that I had last year on the same rig with Win7.

Help is greatly appreciated, attached the file as the FAQ suggests

Hi,

Your hardware seems potent enough to run the HD stuff.

First make sure that your problem is not related to your network hardware.
- check if latest drivers are installed
- reset router
- check that each connection has the correct network speed(so also check duplex settings)

So if all the above seems ok, check your UMS setup:
1. If you are streaming your HD content, does the GUI shows a filled up buffer or is it running empty? You can pause playback and see the buffer filling up. Releasing pause should then not empty your buffer.
2. Have you tried reading and doing what's suggested on the FAQ page?
---
Video/subtitle problems

How can I stop videos from stuttering?
---
3. One quick hint, don't mess with the Buffersize, so leave it at default 200Mb.
What you can do in case you run UMS as a service is increasing wrapper.java.maxmemory size (default = 768).

You can but i'm not sure thats going to fix your issue. Can you give the version 3.0.0-a1 a try for me and see what that does. I know its a test version for new features but it has better memory detection and will automatically set your heap size based on how much ram your computer is running.

Hi Optimus, thanks for the reply,

I've tried the new Alpha version and unfortunately I'm running into the same scenario. I have the mpeg2 selection set to automatic for wired and even tried increasing the heap size. I've tried 200, 400 and 600 buffer but unfortunately none of them seemed to work. The buffer usually hovers around 80 MB regardless of what my buffer is set to.

FWIW I'm using 720p files too, haven't even tried 1080p. Low-quality Divx files seem to work fine but even they have the occasional stutter.

Speedy:
- I checked to ensure my NIC is up to date on drivers.
- I've tried resetting the router and even restoring it to factory defaults. I've also tried eliminating the router and using my ISP provided gateway, unfortunately I run into the same result. I also tried making my PC's IP address a DMZ and toggled UPnP on and off to no avail.
- The duplex thing I suppose I can try though I don't know what to do with that. I'll see if I can find a guide.

I'm almost certain it has to be something with my computer because I had the same issues previously on Windows 7 in my old place on an entirely different modem/router. My girlfriend's old dual core computer was fine so we always used that, I just don't get why mine would struggle even after a format.

Just tried the half duplex, no go unfortunately :(

Also updated my NIC again to the latest driver, same result. This is what my status screen looks like, max buffer is set to 400 mb at the moment but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

The trace log doesn't really indicate any errors, just shows

Code: Select all

05-18 10:23:33 Started playing game.of.thrones.s03e05.proper.720p.hdtv.x264-killers.mkv on your PlayStation 3

I think you tried tweaking all the right options within UMS.
However more and more I get the feeling your problem is related to your NIC settings on either your PC or PS3.
Have you checked your network speed in Task Manager (the Networking tab)? You should see your speed from PC to router.
Oh and the Duplex setting, in my PC (running Windows 7) it is set to Auto Negotiation.
Also check the same on your PS3.
Just to be sure that nothing will be interfering, I would temporarily physically disconnect all other not needed network devices; you can add them later one by one.

This isn't something to do with the setting 'remux' Transcoding Settings>Mencoder uncheck the remux option.....this is set by default, I had a similar problem I just unchecked that, save/restart and it was fine......

So I tried both Plex and Serviio with the same results. It's gotta be something with my computer, I totally don't get it. I even tried two separate Wi-Fi sticks in my desktop to no avail, it couldn't even stream/transcode 720p files which are typically fine on Wireless N.

I tried flipping files from my slow Green drive to another faster HDD as well, same result.

Godinster, could you attach another debug log for 3.0.0-a1. I would like to check that out as well. Maybe we can narrow down the problem for you.
Edit: Just noticed your talking about wireless to your playstation, remember it's only G not N so your going to lose your bandwidth there. Wired Gigabit to your playstation should be fine as your rig looks to me like it can handle transcoding HD files. It's strange as i havent had any problems during the testing i did for windows 8 you guys are having. I'll flash up my playstation this afternoon and see if i have any issues streaming 720p files to it.
