UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
Hello,
I've had this problem also with Playstation Media Server and it still is not resolved. I installed UMS but no succes. I don't know what to do anymore...
Ok here goes:
I've setup UMS (or PMS) on my computer and it works and finds my PS3 but after 1 minutes or so it always freezes up , this has happened everytime and alwyas with another video file. The buffer builds up, but then the speed decreases to 0 mb/sec and the ps3 stops playing the movie. It also disables my network on my computer completely!! I can't go on the internet unless the pc has been restarted. The PS3 says this error: 80710723
My computers specs (new pc from june 2013):
Intel I5 4570 3.2 GHz
8GB DDR3 ram
NO videocard (just the the igpu)
I have windows 8 64bit and I installed UMS (2.65) along with the latest version of Java 64bit and 32 bit.
I have put my PS3 in a DMZ and I have opened these ports for tcp/udp on my router,
3658 > 3658
10070 > 10080
3478 > 3479
9293 > 9293
5223 > 5223
UMS is accepted in windows firewall.
What have I tried to do until now:
Lower bandwith, higher transcode buffer, lower quality ---> no succes
Increase java heapsize to 1536 MB --> no succes
disable "Large Send Offload" for ipv4 and ipv6 ---> no succes
Reinstalled my network drivers --> no succes
PLEASE HELP!!! I have a new pc that should be strong enough for transcoding...It's something with the network settings that's off.
included my debug files..

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
I have been looking at your debug.log, but did not find anything alarming.
So this is going to bea shot in the dark.
I have a similar setup (Win 7 64bit PC <-> PS3) at home and I checked my settings on the network adapters on both PC and PS3.
Can you check if your settings in Speed & Duplex are set to 'Auto Negotiate'?
Also can you check on your PC while testing if your network is showing the correct network speed?
So this is going to bea shot in the dark.

Yes "speed & Duplex" is set to negotiate.
And what do you mean by "Also can you check on your PC while testing if your network is showing the correct network speed?" How do I test and check this?
And could the problem be Java? I have the last version but maybe an older version is better?
Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
So both PS3 and PC?Yes "speed & Duplex" is set to negotiate.
In Windows 7 you can check this in via the Task Manager, tab Networking, where it actually shows the link speed to your router. And what do you mean by "Also can you check on your PC while testing if your network is showing the correct network speed?" How do I test and check this?
I guess your java version should be ok; I think you have the same 64-bit version installed 1.7.0_25 if I compare with my own setup...And could the problem be Java? I have the last version but maybe an older version is better?
As said before this was a long shot.
Though I still have the feeling it is related to your network, since your PC has the specs to run UMS with no problem.
Maybe you have to check your router settings as well or try other speed & duplex settings for better results...

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
I will check the full duplex setting on the PS3.
I also discoverd that I can't share media via Windows Media Player 12. When i try to enbale it, it can't do it. And when I try to do this in services.msc (start the Windows Media Player Sharing service", the pc says error 1068 'dependency service or group failed to start'
"SSDP Discovery Service" and "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" are working.
Pfff I'm fed up with this (new) computer. I miss my old reliable windows xp computer albeit it was getting slow.

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
I would advice you to focus on just one problem at a time.
Getting WMP 12 server up and running is a bit out of scope of this forum, because this is all about UMS. So you would be better off addressing this in another forum or maybe Windows Support Group.
What I know for UMS is that it does not require particular Windows services.
What it does requires:
- network adapters functioning at proper speed and duplex settings
- Windows firewall opened for the UMS listening port (default port 5001 on TCP)
- Windows firewall opened (incoming rules) for ums.exe (any) and javaw.exe (TCP)
- Windows firewall opened (incoming rules) for wrapper.exe (any) when running UMS as a service
As a strategy to narrow things down, I would advice you to make things as simple as possible and take small steps by adding new functionality in your network.
-Disconnect your router cable to the internet.
-Disable your firewall on your PC.
-Only power your router, PC and PS3 and see if your setup works.
-If so try the setup with the enabled PC Firewall.
-Then try the same with any other network device switched on.
-Finally plugin your internet router cable.
I don't know if it helps but it is a way forward I guess...

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
Ok thanks for the help but everything you said doesn't work.
I give up, unless someone can come to my house here in Belgium and help me
It should be something with the new hardware config I setup, this is a new computer I built myself. Everything brand new from june 2013, new hasswell cpu and motherboard (asrock). Maybe with new drivers in the future, it will work but for now I give up. I've been trying for weeks now.
I think I will place a 10 meter HDMI cable between my pc and my tv. (i hope 10 m is not too long)

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
Don't give up yet.
Maybe another lead, because of what you said in your opening post:
The PS3 says this error: 80710723
Maybe it's worth checking that error code on the internet.
I did a quick scan and and it surely indicates network problems, although I'm not sure about the actual cause yet.
A thing to check on the PS3:
-latest firmware update in place?
Maybe you can rule out bits and pieces of your network hardware causing the problems by temporily replacing these with things you have double or can borrow from friends.
-so use temporary different UTP cable (cat5 or cat6)
-use a different router
And remember to start simple by only setting up and connecting what you are focussing upon and then attaching more devices when things start working.
Apart from this I can only wish you good luck.
And some help from moderators/developers is also appreciated if they have some bright ideas to share...

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
@SpeedyQ
I'm glad to inform that I made a breakthrough!
I removed the ethernet drivers (they are the most recent) and I replaced them with a previous version. Again I deactivated the "Large send offload" for IPv4 and IPv6.
UMQ succesfully streamed/transcoded a 1080p mkv movie but it's not perfect though
After 1h12min the movie stopped playing and my network got disabled.

Re: UMS on Win8 64bit always freezing
Great to hear that. Congratulations.
I looked at my own setup of the NIC and I have IPv6 disabled.
It does not make sense to enable it if you're using IPv4; and you have the benefit that it will not interfere with IPv4. So maybe a tip to disable IPv6.
And ifyou have it running again itis useful to look at the debug.log again just to see if UMS is configured ok...
Let me know if you need more help.
