MKV playback error - distorted right side of screen

Whenever i'm trying to watch different anime series, which are all saved in mkv format, the right side of the screen will not display correctly. The last 6 inches (give or take) will be a stretched out view of the pixels just before that.

When i watch that same mkv with tsmuxer or ffmpeg the screen stretching problem is resolved but i lose the subs that are encoded in the files (and despite all the anime i've been watching my japanese is not so good that i could go without subs).
