Well he recently did a poll and asked what renderers people were using. The majority said they were using this on PS3. That's why I say I'm surprised. Besides it's not like PS3 is expensive anymore (especially because PS4 is due out this year). It makes an excellent cost-efficient media center (compared to building an HTPC) and plus you get the bonus of it having a huge library of games available as well.

2. Aren't "using PS3" ..PS3 aint free you know.. and if they had free access to PS3's, they might just stick to "PS3 Media Server"
3. You are "surprised"?, what alternative would you suggest worldwide, subtitle craving, generic DLNA users?.. (i know what i'd suggest to them;))
4. "Universal" with a mofo'ing capital U, ..that means..UMS is, and will be (read; strives to be) the best DLNA server for ALL devices. (correct me if i'm wrong)
So.. Olill.. stay tune..Subjunk & Co will fix this.
1. I'm unsure why that's funny.
2. Niether are TV's and other renderers, but people have those. :)
3. PS3 since it's cheap enough now and makes an excellent HTPC when using UMS. I also hear Rasberry PI is excellent as well and it's even cheaper than PS3 (but it takes a bit of work to get one of these setup and it's more for advanced users).
4. Yes, I know what the U means in UMS. Just because other renderers "work" with it doesn't mean they'll run it as well as a PS3.

Are you working for sony? ^^

Edit: ok just kidding.. anyways, for me, it's what you have, not what you could buy..
This guy has a DLNA TV, but your kinda saying.. "get a PS3 if you want DLNA to work properly"

We just don't agree =)

And for the record ..i have a PS3 slim, but i never use it cause i got DLNA in my Bravia..
I've been a happy user of both PMS and UMS for a while now..it's working near perfect..(just as PS3 playback is also not always 100% perfect every time)

Edit2: But i can see that not all renders behaves equally nice with UMS..and that's the mission ( i guess, at least in my little pony world ) - get all the DLNA renders hooked up with UMS and start debugging so "we" can get those renders straight! - (grammar fekup deleted sry)

Edit3: And my Bravia supports folder thumbnails, but PS3 does not.. (hah :P)

Yeah it is our goal to make all renderers work perfectly. We are constantly improving all of them, even PS3. In the next version we improve MP4 support on PS3.
As for the slow directory listing, please change logging level to trace (described in the second post here), reproduce the slow browsing, then post your debug info here so I can look for clues.

It is a Sony Bravia 40EX716. I also did a search in the PMS forum, and it seems to be a "common" problem for Bravias.

Answering the things which where suggested:

a) cache off - this is where I came from - there is just no difference between cache on and off as soon as subdirectories to be displayed are involved
b) debug.log with TRACE enabled - just descended into "movies" which is my root dir for movies: http://pastebin.com/LVb00R9v
c) thumbnails = false - doesn't seem to have any effect - thumbnails are still loaded

I noticed, that loading a directory which only contains videos is fast. It is more or less loaded completly (even with 20 videos in it) directly.
But as soon as there are subdirectories... first 6 directories are loaded, and then slowly one folder-icon after each other.

Any idea how to turn of folder-icons?
