directory listing is slow

Post by OlliL »

Hi,

I wonder if it is possible to speed up directory listing. I already have "usecache = true" and the database is generated and up to date. But still, whenever I enter the root directory of my movies directory, I get the forst 6 directories listed immediatly and whenever I begin to scroll down, I have to wait some time until the next 3 directories begin to appear to the list. And this repeats until I reached the end of the directory. I thought that when I've "usecache" set, UMS would just send the complete directory content to the TV and then it is an easy browsing but thats not whats happening.

I can see in debug.log, that no longer ffmpeg is called when I enter a directory but I don't feel any real difference comparing to "usecache = false" from the time it takes to navigate through the directories.

When was the last time you defragged the drive you're trying to read the files from? Also, have you ran checks on your network to make sure that wasn't an issue?

Drive fragmentation is nothing which can occur in FreeBSD.
Network is fine as I'm able to play for example 720p videos.
No disk access should be needed for scanning directories when cache is active - should it?

Sorry, in your original post you didn't state which OS you were using, so I just assumed Windows. You also didn't mention which renderer, either. I don't use the cache option and directories are loading fast for me (both regular folders from my PC and plugin folders as well using a PS3). Maybe try turning the cache option off and see if that helps. I'm having no folder slowdown issues with the Windows version of UMS. It could be an issue with the Linux version of UMS possibly or maybe you should try a fresh install of UMS and see if that helps. If it's a UMS+Linux issue SubJunk would have to chime in about that.

I would say it sound like a tad bit slow..

On my BraviaW5500 it's semi slow aswell .. compared to ps3 atleast.
I'd say aprox 10-15 items/sec =P

I thought it was very slow until i got a WDTVLive, which browses almost same speed. So i guess PS3 just has this more fluent feel to it. (also when on TV and WD TVL ive it's pretty clunky navigating with infrared =/ - which surely has something to do with it)

A comment on slow browsing. Somethings are not controllable by UMS but it is the render that calls the shots. What I suspect takes time is usually fetching thumbnails, and this is controlled by the render completely. The PS3 for example dont' support folder icons and thus don't fetch any. Caching is most likely not a relly big isuue here compared to transfering a lot of thumbnails to the render.

Yeah, sidenote.. I think most people, including myself, don't know what UMS cache is completely.. =? ,
or... people suspect it to be something it's not.

If browsing is slow, try it with totally disabled thumbnails (video, picture, DVD). Disable all of them in UMS, restart it and try again if you will spot difference.

I'm surprised so many people aren't using this on PS3 since that's what it was originally developed for (and will work best on).

1. LOL
2. Aren't "using PS3" ..PS3 aint free you know.. and if they had free access to PS3's, they might just stick to "PS3 Media Server"
3. You are "surprised"?, what alternative would you suggest worldwide, subtitle craving, generic DLNA users?.. (i know what i'd suggest to them;))
4. "Universal" with a mofo'ing capital U, ..that means..UMS is, and will be (read; strives to be) the best DLNA server for ALL devices. (correct me if i'm wrong)

So.. Olill.. stay tune..Subjunk & Co will fix this.
