Newbie Question(s)
Hello all, I am new to UMS but have tried several other media servers (Twonky, PLEX, others). I have (3) DirecTv receivers with the newest H34. I have a couple of laptops, a desktop, Xbox 360 and am running an ActionTec modem on a wireless LAN in my home. I have several hundred MP4 movie files that I send to my Xbox 360 to watch on a Mitsubishi 65" DLP TV. In my limited exposure to UMS it became apparent that this media server will allow me to play all of these movie files through my (3) DirecTV receivers anywhere in the house via my network. My question(s) are:
1) Does UMS work with all DirecTV receivers?
2) Will all of my movies play in their current format MP4?
3) Where should the UMS reside, on my desktop or should I set-up a slave desktop to be used only for media storage (I have an extra older desktop)?
4) How does all of this work on a wireless network?
I realize that to most of you these are simple questions, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to and would like any input as to the best way to approach this issue. I have just moved into a different house and basically started from scratch in setting things up. Each of my DirecTV receivers is in a separate room, the Xbox is in the room with the main H34 receiver, the desktop is in a separate office area and the laptops are all over the house. We don't really watch TV from the laptops, just from the TV's in the room where the DirecTV receivers reside. The modum is in the basement of the house and I am running a wireless network throughout the house. I have an extra desktop that could be used as a dedicated media storage device and perhaps that is the best place for the Universal Media Server to reside - I'' m ok with that, but am looking for input as to the best way to set this all up. Thanks for the help in advance!
