Updating from 12.0.1 - Can I go directly to 14.0 ???

Post by MTOakey »

Greetings all, it has been a while I know... but my Win11 running 12.0.1 has been just fine with the exception of NOT starting with computer boot as it is set to do. Besides that the only "issues" I have had is user interface - I like to tweak column and header sizes for my monitor and pleasure ... I have asked/suggested that those 3 dividers be made moveable, don't know if that ever happened yet.
So, as the "Subject" line infers, I may want to try 14.0 or newer, so can I just do a clean install of it, or do I need to do a "Step" update using several versions to get to 14.0 or newer ???
Any help, guidance, or instruction to include links to other posts regarding this. :)
Thanks

If you want to do a "clean install" then just use the latest version as this will start with a fresh database and default settings.
This is probably the best way if you are not bothered about the played status of your files. It will take a bit of time to fully scan your media but this will happen in the background.

For upgrading from an older version and want to keep your existing settings and the played status of your files then it should work fine to just go to the latest, and any necessary changes to the database will be made for the new version. This may also need a rescan if those new columns are empty and need filling.

As the UMS.conf will not be changed it will not have the documentation for the new settings but these new settings will be added at the end.

If you want to try a clean install but not sure then make a backup of "C:\ProgramData\UMS".
If then you just want to restore the settings but start with a new database then you can copy UMS.conf back to this folder, same with the other files.

I would suggest waiting till the 14.2.1 is public (should be there for patreon now if not soon) as it fixed a few bugs. One was preventing my PS4 from playing transcoded videos in 14.1 and I think this would have happened on older devices.
