What happens to the transcoded output?

What happens to the transcoded output?

Is it simply discarded after the video has been watched or is it saved somewhere?

It's simply discarded during playback. If you're using the PS3, you can hit Triangle => Copy, it'll transcode and give you an output that's saved.
