windows 8 codec pack and UMS
just got windows 8 and before I go and install a codec pack wanted to get recommendations.
coming from windows 7 system (using 1.5.2 UMS) and various codec packs intalled - k-lite, CCCP, and shark
can you recommend the optimal codec pack for windows 8 and UMS streaming via ethernet - anime and large 4+GB movie mkvs mostly
Also, are there any particular settings for the packs that are recommended re UMS.
thanks!!

would love to hear any advice or current setups re codecs - thanks!!!
Re: windows 8 codec pack and UMS
Try Shark007 and if you have CUDA support select LAV for all playback including AVI.
Re: windows 8 codec pack and UMS
triple,
thanks for the response, but I had already gone with K-lite mega (both x32 and x64 install). Here are my comments:
1. i have a WIN 8 i7-3930k (6 cores) w 16GB ram and NVidia 680 + a synology 412+ NAS - contected via ethernet to PS3 (old 80gb one)
2. downloaded k-lite mega and setup options with "lots of stuff" (note mkv-s are using haali) and selected use software for decoding (read up help info and forums that say if you have a powerful processor you don't need hardware acceleration cuda etc)
3. downloaded 1.52 UMS and set 1536 for memory use and transcode folder is visible
Results so far:
1. everything (movie and anime mkvs) run great (except Ci...via) both via PC drive (superfast) and synology network drive (somewhat slower menu reads)
2. anything with subs needs to be run over transcode folder and select advance sub transcoding (if mencoder doesn't work, select avisynth) - also I use mkv-merge gui to make sure all subs not necessary are removed
So far so good, waiting for more user feedback to upgrade from 1.52

Re: windows 8 codec pack and UMS
Set your codecs to LAV 0.54.1 (released 27/11/12) using LAV splitter with FFMPEG playback and I think you will notice an improvement in quality. Works for most encodings including .m2ts and .mkv. My WHS v1 uses a Q9550 so no Cuda on the LAV but everything runs well. I also use LAV Cuda on my HTPC with GTS450. Also, nothing wrong with UMS 2.1.2 although I am having issues with 2.2.0.
Re: windows 8 codec pack and UMS
My recommendation is K-Lite Mega without 64-bit pack. In my experience (and feedback from other users) is to avoid 64-bit codecs
