Some MKV and MP4 files take 1-3 minutes to begin playback on PS4/Xbox One - why?

Post by knaledge »

Getting right to it - I've noticed that some MKV files and MP4 files (yet to figure out the root cause; resolution, size, bitrates, etc.) take upwards of 1-3 minutes to begin playing, specifically on the PS4.

The Xbox One seems to take less time to begin playing, though it is still not what I would consider "fast" - so for the sake of this post, consider them fairly equal with the Xbox One sometimes beginning playback slightly earlier. No fanboyism here ;)

All that said, here's the odd part:

When I nav to the [Transcode] folder, go to the "offending" file, and select "No Transcode" (for that file) - boom, instant, flawless (to my eyes/ears) playback.

I realize I could just exclude certain extensions from transcoding - but I'm wondering: which... setting?... is causing the delay in playback start? Or, perhaps it's a combination of configuration points I could adjust?

Environment:
  • UMS 5.2.3 (Java 8)
  • 2009 MacBook Pro 13" (2.26GHz C2D, 8GB RAM, SSHD)
  • MBP is wireless (5.0GHz and 2.5GHz at my disposal, though seemingly makes no difference)
  • PS4 and Xbox One are wired to router (with IP passthrough and port routing/forwarding as a fallback)
