Subtitle position

Post by skovo »

Hello,

I´ve been trying to find a topic about this "problem" on the forum, but I wasn´t, so setting up this topic. If I overlooked it, I apologize :)

Is there an option to change subtitles positioning in the video? I was trying some of the settings available for subtitles, but didn´t find this option.
The issue is, that subtitles are displayed always only within the video.

If you play a 16:9 format video, everything is ok, the subtitles are at the bottom and in reasonable size.
However most movies are in 21:9/2.35:1 aspect ratio, where you have black borders at the top/bottom of the screen and in such case, since the subtitles are displayed within the video, they are smaller size and honestly, I don´t like them displayed within video when playing 21:9/2.35:1 aspect ratio video files.

I would want to have them at the bottom all the time (use the black border for subtitles, as it´s less disturbing when watching a movie). Is there a way to set this up ? If not, are there any plans to include this feature in some future release?

Try switch to mencoder, does that help?

FFMPEG seems to put subtitles inside the video area, whereas Mencoder puts the subtitles in the "outside" area (in the black frame)
I think the subtitles should always be in the black area if possible.

Ok, I´ve figured out how to switch to MEncoder that and it fixed the subtitle positioning, however with MEncoder there are issues with video playback.

If you pause the video or FW/RW and then resume playback, it takes quite some time to resume and the audio/video are de-synced
Other issue I found is, that by some HEVC x265 video files I play, the top/bottom black borders are not black, but green :)

Tried latest 5.4 stable version as well as 6.0b version. Am using W10 and Panasonic Viera Plasma TV

That's weird as both FFmpeg and MEncoder put the subtitles within the video for me, even for 2.35:1 movies. I think this should be a user configurable feature.

I just tried 6.0.0-b2 and with FFmpeg the subtitles are displayed now always at the bottom of the screen :)
