Sony 4K Ultra HD TV
Sony 4K Ultra HD TV
I have been using UMS to stream to my Samsung Smart TV and it works perfectly, particularly as it supports external subtitles which I need. I am now thinking of changing my TV to a Sony - model SONY BRAVIA KD43X8309CBU Smart Ultra HD 4k. This is a fairly major investment but before I go ahead I would like to know if I am still going to be able to stream using UMS with support for external subtitles.
I have looked at the list of currently supported renderers but it is difficult to establish if this falls into one of the Sony categories listed.
Any help that anyone can give on this would be much appreciated,.

Re: Sony 4K Ultra HD TV
It will depend more on what your new TV capabilities are... if it accepts soft subtitles streamed as a separate track then UMS will be able to stream it (as is the case of your current Samsung TV).
If you post a link to the supported formats of the new TV we may be able to confirm it.

Re: Sony 4K Ultra HD TV
Thanks for getting back to me. I'm afraid I can't find any information on the supported formats. Sony says that it is DLNA compliant and recommends Serviio as a media server. I know that Sony devices will not play external subtitles streamed from Serviio but similar Sony devices will play external subtitles streamed from UMS. My understanding (very limited) is that this is because Serviio and UMS use different streaming systems. I wonder if it is safe to assume that, if the TV I am looking at can stream from Serviio (albeit without external subtitles), then, like older Sony devices, it will play subtitles if the streaming comes from UMS.
On a separate not I have just updated UMS to build 5.5.0 and now find that, for new content, subtitles are not showing - is this a glitch in the build?

Re: Sony 4K Ultra HD TV
Try to find an online guide for your TV and look for supported media formats. Most media servers (UMS, Serviio, you name it...) are based on the same standards: DLNA. The game is to tailor/customize the system to really get the most of your renderer (the screen where you're enjoying the content), in the case of UMS via the .conf files (see http://www.universalmediaserver.com/faq ... erSupport1)
Regarding your subtitles question, better post on the support forum following viewtopic.php?f=9&t=556
Good luck!
