Bad Stuttering

I hope you guys can help!

Im getting a bad stuttering on pretty much everything i play through my PS3, even just did a clean install with a few basic programs (skype, minecraft, jdownloader)

I have a Q6600 (4 core) at default speed, 4 gig of ram, ATIHD6870 so im pretty sure the hardware side should be fine.

Network is all hardwired (pc into a Broadband supplier switch (SKY UK) then off to small generic powered hub(basic switch) and onto the PS3/Sky Box/XBOX360

When does this occur?

Is it with movies after about 30 minutes? I have a similar issue, movies play, then after about 30 minutes, i get a load of java errors, with stuttering and freezing.

Pretty much from the start, thats why i didnt give a time as its constant and the film unwatchable

Considering your hardware you should be ok for streaming without stuttering.
First thing to check I guess is your network speed between PC and router. You can do see this using the Taskmanager or via the configuration control, network settings.
Special attention to the network adapter in the PC; find out if settings are correct for half duplex / duplex / full duplex and how it determines network speed.
Sometimes disable and then enable the adapter will fix it.
Check the router settings and the PS3 settings for the same.
If your network is ok, but still stuttering still occurs, you have to check your UMS and/or java settings.
If UMS is configured to be running as a server you probably want to try increasing the java heap size (note that you can enter a new value during install of UMS).
Then the usage of your resources is highly dependable on your file content, the encoding engine being used, plugins, subtitles yes/no, and probably other stuff as well.
But all this is described in the FAQ or already started topics in the forum, so you should search in there.
If you still can't work it out you should post your debug.log; there are a lot of people in this forum willing to help you out...

I did a lan speed test with a laptop at the point the ps3 plugs into. I wasnt sure which points to post so i did a screengrab (and crop lol) of with a hub in line and with out. used a 200meg test file

Does one of you guys who knows your nuggets see anything that would suggest a problem that may be causing the stuttering?

Just curious.. if you start the movie, and then pause it for 30 seconds..and then unpause, does it then play fluently for a while?

Maybe try setting the maximum bandwidth limit on the General Configuration page to 80 or 90?
Also you can try setting the MPEG-2 options on the Transcoding Settings page to keyint=25:vqscale=1:vqmin=2 which will produce the same quality with a lower bitrate

Ok.. pausing for approx 3-4 minutes (while i made some toast) produced smooth playback of approx 2-3 seconds

Mr Subjunk, your reply suggests to me you think it might be bandwidth or am i misunderstanding you?

Yeah bandwidth would be my guess, you measured it at 90mbps and by default UMS limits videos to 110mbps so try changing that limit

Ok ill try changing that tomorrow, getting late here.

What confuses me though is a film i have that played fine over the same network a month ago with all the same hardware now stutters.

Is there a way i can see the required bandwidth for a movie playing? Because this stuttering is happening with pretty much everything (like above a movie that played fine a month or so ago)
